Week 13 Question 1

What is one concept that you are having difficulty with in Chapter 17? Why do you think that you are struggling with this concept? If you are not struggling with any topic, think of one that you think causes problems for a student and explain why.

  1. I think I am struggling the most with understanding is when enthalpy is favorable and entropy is unfavorable or vice versa. I'm having difficulty understanding if the reaction is spontaneous at high or low temperatures. I think I'm having trouble with this because I'm not completely comfortable with the signs (+ or -) and if that means it's favorable or unfavorable for entropy and enthalpy because they are opposites. It's just a lot to think about and I don't have a good method of working through it to come to the right answer.

  2. I wouldn't say I'm struggling with anything that can't be helped with repetition. Something that puzzled me a bit before I reviewed my lecture notes was what determined whether a temperature was high or low for a reaction. My problem was that I was looking at the question from the aspect of the temperature by itself and not how it affected the factors for Gibb's free energy equation.

  3. I agree with Emily. Also, knowing when to apply our new equations such as G=H-TS or G=-RTln(k). The problems I have done so far I always get lost probably from not being able to think about whats happening when it says endothermic or exothermic and as it effects enthalpy or entropy.
