Week 14

Discuss one aspect of a comparison of a voltaic cell and an electrolytic cell.
In other words, we want to compare and contrast these two types of cells. The first person to respond choose one aspect to discuss and then the next person choose another aspect, etc.

5 comments:

  1. If the E °cell is positive, we know it is a voltaic cell.
If the E °cell is negative, we know it is a electrolytic cell.

  2. in voltaic cells, the anode has a negative charge and the cathode has a positive charge; whereas with electrolytic cells have anodes with positive charges and cathodes with negative charges. However, reduction still occurs in cathodes and oxidation in anodes

  3. A voltaic cell occurs from a redox reaction, but an electrolytic cell needs an outside source like an added electric current.

    1. A voltaic cell uses a spontaneous redox reaction, whereas an electrolytic cell uses an outside source to drive a non spontaneous redox reaction.
